“After studying
Pop Art with Wayne Thiebaud, I moved my studio from
Davis, California to Bushwick in New York City. I
began a dialog with the work of Andy Warhol. Fifty years ago, Andy was a very
busy guy in NYC. He was art famous. He was mass producing contemporary art
using images he found in the media. He hired a staff to produce his paintings
while he created his life as a celebrity.* In California I had read in the New York Times that Mr.
Warhol’s ocean side estate at Montauk, east of New York City was recently
sold, so I made a point of driving out to get a feel for the place. Andy
found his ocean estate wasn’t as glamorous as NYC and was not on his social
calendar much. I took a look around and began painting Andy ‘communications’
from his estate, thinking he would have liked that.” Mel Smothers Click here to

he liked the art business best. DEAR ANDY 2010 Page 1 Page 2 Dear Andy 2009 Postcards to Andy Warhol 2007-08 Painting Over an Andy Warhol 2006 |
