Mountain Lake
The title for this series of paintings comes from Carl Jung and his research into human spirituality.
He communicated with a Hopi Shaman named Mountain Lake.
I continue to return to Lake Tahoe as a subject.

Hello Mel Smothers,
I met you at the Jack Jack’s art opening last night and enjoyed our conversation. as an addicted writer, I am compelled to dive into what is behnid your work. I got an inkling of that last evening.
the paintings have their own reality grounded in the horizon. Each painting has a piece of the Earth-Pie to dine on. I did tha last evening at Jack Jack’s in Babylon Village.
it is a rare treat for Babylon residents and anyone on Long Island to have the opportunity to view abstract reality. canvasses big and small reek of what I’ll call “the jiggle effect” I spent time squinting at his work. always starting from the horizon, i let my eye slowly head to the foreground. These paintings are field trips. They fill the need to have an imagination. Mountain Lake paintings for example. He plays with the surface, the ever-changing surface of water. as a naturalist, I learned a lot from his work. I learned that Mel takes his viewers to an open place where they can SEE athe horizon and how everything else is connected to it. For people who can’at see the horizon because of where they live, go see his paintings – 223 Deep Park Avenue, Babylon, N.Y. right next to the LIRR station.
Hi Tom, I do appreciate you taking the time to look closely at Islands and then to express your thoughts. I’m honored.
I’ll post this on my website and perhaps you will have some responses.
